Fabián Detrés
Fabián Detrés (Maricao, Puerto Rico, 1978) is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work encompasses painting, drawing, photography, installation, and visual research projects.
Trained at the School of Visual Arts and Design of Puerto Rico—where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Painting with highest honors in 2001—he developed an early career marked by an introspective aesthetic and accolades such as the Randy Barceló Scholarship.
His first solo exhibition, Piedra Filosofal (2001), launched a sustained career in galleries and cultural institutions across Puerto Rico and abroad. Following Hurricane Maria (2017), his practice took a decisive turn toward themes of migration, displacement, identity, and memory. Since then, his work has intertwined with personal and collective narratives linked to life in Puerto Rico’s rural periphery, the diaspora, and the emotional impact of forced mobility. Series such as La Buena Fortuna (2025), Aves Migratorias, and Visión Periférica expand his artistic language through mixed media, unconventional materials, and a conceptual approach centered on transformation, territory, and cultural continuity.
Detrés also maintains a firm commitment to art education and initiatives aimed at strengthening the creative and cultural life of the Cordillera Central. Notable recent initiatives include the creation of the Maricao Historical Digital Archive and art seminars and workshops conducted in collaboration with the Bucarabón Foundation.
