Karlo Andrei Ibarra
"An artist needs to be a political character inside his own country. He can't become alienated of the everyday situations".
DESCRIPTION
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1982.
The work of Karlo Ibarra represents the voice of Puerto Ricans surrounded by a culture that seems to fade. He becomes responsible for it using his art to employ a constant social critique to Puerto Rico's political and economic situation, forcing the observer to take a solid position. Recent works are focused on circumstances related to historic legacy, corruption, memory, and political systems in the context of several countries in Latin America
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is strongly linked to my own geopolitical context. I employ a wide variety of media that refers to conceptual art and mass media while addressing issues of social, political, cultural and geographic boundaries. My practice relies on social and political cognitions gathered from personal investigations, which draw correlations between individual and national identities and make larger observations respective to a global community
